Vireo Health, a cannabis company with a strong presence in the state, will be partnering with Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Health System to study if medical marijuana can reduce opioid use in patients suffering from chronic pain.

The $3.8M was included in an R01 grant from the NIH. Chinazo Cunningham, a physician, and researcher interested in drug use and HIV is the principal investigator in the study.

The study plans to include 250 HIV positive and negative adults certified for medical marijuana. The 18-month study will assess pain levels, medical and illicit use of marijuana and opioids, and perception of how marijuana use affects opioid use.
